Many knitters and crocheters understand the therapeutic benefits of knitting and crocheting. Research has proven that crafting reduces stress and anxiety along with many other health benefits. Often times, customers visit the Outlet to purchase yarn for charity projects. This is what brought me to not only visit the Outlet on numerous occasions, but inquire about spending my Sundays at the store.
In 2013, I received unexpected news that my father was hit and killed by a drunk driver on his way home. The news was devastating as he was only 43 years old. His sudden death ultimately allowed him to save the lives of four others by becoming an organ and tissue donor.
Two years after his passing and exactly on father’s day, I arrived home to a mysterious brown package on my bed. I was rather confused as I had not remembered ordering anything. As I opened the package, I was shocked and in awe when I pulled out a purple crocheted shawl. As I read the attached note card, I teared up as a volunteer from the Wrapped in Love group at NJ Sharing Network thanked my family and I for saying ‘Yes’ to donation and to the gift of life.
The Wrapped in Love group at NJ Sharing Network in New Providence, NJ knits and crochets comfort shawls as a token of appreciation for families who said ‘Yes’ to the gift of life. Receiving a comfort shawl, especially on father’s day, felt as if it was given to me from my dad.
Soon after receiving the shawl, I reached out to the NJ Sharing Network to see how I could get involved and donate shawls for other families. I was so deeply touched by this gesture that I immediately picked up my needles and yarn to do for others as what was done for me.
