Have you ever thought about how the yarn we love is made? Understanding the complexities and labor intensive process helps us to share a deep appreciation for every part of the process and perhaps getting more involved with the fiber making process.
History of Spinning
Advances in technology have drastically changed yarn production and even how our clothes are made. Did you know that spinning fiber “is the simple act of drawing out a few fibers and twisting them together to form a yarn. The process predates written history, and was first done by hand and with sticks”.
Believe it or not, this ancient process is still being done today. Spinning can be done either on a drop spindle or a spinning wheel. When it comes to spinning, it’s all about how much twist you put into the fiber. There are several online tutorials that show how fiber is twisted to create yarn.
